Things to Do in Borrego Springs with Kids

Borrego Springs is a tiny desert town wrapped entirely by Anza-Borrego, California's largest state park. Kids hunt for the 130-plus giant metal sculptures of Galleta Meadows, hike to a real palm oasis in Borrego Palm Canyon, and — as the state's first Dark Sky Community — see the Milky Way with the naked eye at night.

💡 Local tip: Summer is brutally hot and the visitor center closes weekdays June–September; the magic seasons are the wildflower superbloom (late winter/spring) and clear, moonless stargazing nights. Bring layers after dark.

Anza-Borrego Desert State Park Visitor Center

This cleverly built visitor center is tucked partly underground to stay cool, with a demonstration desert garden, exhibits and rangers who point you to wildflower and wildlife spots — the perfect first stop for a trail map and conditions. Visit early in summer, and note it closes weekdays June through September.

Galleta Meadows Sky Art Sculptures

Kids love hunting for the 130-plus life-size metal sculptures by artist Ricardo Breceda scattered across open desert — prehistoric mammoths, saber-tooth cats and a 350-foot serpent that dips beneath the road. They sit on unfenced land along Borrego Springs Road, free to roam anytime. Go in cooler morning or golden-hour light and bring water.

Borrego Palm Canyon Trail

This roughly 3-mile loop rewards families with a genuine palm oasis fed by a year-round stream, home to California's only native palm and sometimes bighorn sheep on the ridges — the classic Anza-Borrego hike and a great intro to desert plants. Start early with plenty of water since there's little shade, and skip it on scorching afternoons.

Font's Point (California Badlands)

Nicknamed the 'California Badlands,' this dramatic overlook drops into a maze of eroded canyons that glow red, gold and purple at sunrise and sunset. The 4-mile approach is soft sand and really needs a high-clearance 4WD, so check conditions first. Stunning but exposed — no water or shade, so bring your own and time it for the cooler hours.

Christmas Circle Community Park

This grassy circular park in the heart of town is the community's gathering spot, with a playground, picnic tables, shade and restrooms — an easy stop to let kids burn off energy between desert adventures, and host to seasonal festivals and markets. Bring water since summer days get very hot.

Borrego Springs Dark Sky Stargazing

Borrego Springs was California's first certified International Dark Sky Community, and with 300+ clear nights a year the Milky Way is often visible to the naked eye. Families can lie back on a blanket away from town lights or join a seasonal star party. Bring layers since desert nights cool fast, and check the moon phase — darkest near a new moon.
