The first-timer battle plan

Disneyland for first-timers (2026)

What to ride first, how Lightning Lane actually works, where tickets are genuinely cheaper, and the lowest-crowd days to go — the plan we wish we'd had on our first visit.

⚠️ Big 2026 change: Disneyland ended daily Early Entry for hotel guests on Jan 5, 2026 — everyone now enters at the same time, so simply being at the gate early is your edge. (On-site guests instead get one free anytime Lightning Lane per stay.)

Hit these first

The must-do rides

⭐ = rope-drop these in the opening 90 minutes (or grab a Lightning Lane). Know each kid's height before you go.

Disneyland Park

RideLandThrillHeight
Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance

The most impressive attraction at the resort — a 20-min trackless story. It's a paid Lightning Lane Single Pass; book it in the app rather than rope-dropping (long walk, frequent breakdowns).

Galaxy's EdgeThrillNone
Indiana Jones Adventure

Jeep ride through a cursed temple with drops and sharp turns. Highest minimum height in the park — lines build fast.

AdventurelandThrill46"
Space Mountain

Indoor coaster in the dark — fast, disorienting, a classic.

TomorrowlandThrill40"
Matterhorn Bobsleds

The original 1959 coaster; a rough vintage ride down a snowy peak.

FantasylandThrill42"
Tiana's Bayou Adventure

Newest ride — a log flume with a drop. Short morning waits that build quickly on hot days.

Critter CountryModerate40"
Peter Pan's Flight

Beloved dark ride that is ALWAYS a long line (slow loader). Rope-drop it or skip.

FantasylandGentleNone
Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run

Pilot the Falcon in a cockpit; interactive with mild motion.

Galaxy's EdgeModerate38"
Pirates of the Caribbean

Long, classic boat ride; a must-do with lower mid-day waits.

New Orleans SquareGentleNone
Haunted Mansion

Iconic Doom Buggy ride through 999 happy haunts.

New Orleans SquareGentleNone
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad

Runaway mine-train coaster; a great family-first thrill, even better after dark.

FrontierlandModerate40"
Jungle Cruise

Pun-filled boat tour with live skippers.

AdventurelandGentleNone
"it's a small world"

Slow boat; perfect for little ones and a mid-day cool-down.

FantasylandGentleNone
Star Tours

Randomized Star Wars motion-simulator flight.

TomorrowlandModerate40"

Disney California Adventure

RideLandThrillHeight
Radiator Springs Racers

Many call it the best ride at the whole resort — a themed dark ride plus a 40 mph outdoor race. Single Rider line helps.

Cars LandModerate40"
Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout

Free-fall drop tower; the hardest Lightning Lane to score at DCA — rope-drop or book instantly.

Avengers CampusThrill40"
Incredicoaster

Launched coaster with a loop; spectacular lit up at night. (Confirm exact height on Disney's site.)

Pixar PierThrill48"
WEB Slingers: A Spider-Man Adventure

Interactive web-shooting ride; under 7 must ride with someone 14+.

Avengers CampusGentleNone
Toy Story Midway Mania

4-D shooting game that's fun for all ages.

Pixar PierGentleNone
Grizzly River Run

Whitewater raft — you will get soaked.

Grizzly PeakModerate42"

Heights and ride lineups change — confirm on disneyland.com before you rely on a specific number.

Morning to night

Your one-day plan

Before open

Arrive at the front gate 45–60 min early — security, ticket scan and the walk to the hub eat 20–30 min. Eat breakfast first or bring it.

First 90 minutes

Walk to the back of the park and hit your highest-demand rides while lines are short: Indiana Jones → Matterhorn → Space Mountain → Peter Pan. Book Rise of the Resistance in the app instead of rope-dropping it.

Late morning

Galaxy's Edge (Smugglers Run + your booked Rise window), then Pirates and Haunted Mansion while waits are still moderate.

Midday (12–4pm)

Peak crowds + heat: do high-capacity rides and shows — small world, Jungle Cruise, a parade, character meets. Mobile-order lunch before you're hungry.

Evening

Lines drop at dinner and after dark — re-ride favorites (Big Thunder and Space Mountain shine at night), then grab a fireworks spot ~45 min early.

If park-hopping

Hopping opens at 11am or later. Do Disneyland Park at rope drop, then hop to DCA in the afternoon for Radiator Springs Racers and Cars Land lit up at night.

Skip the line

Lightning Lane, explained

  • Lightning Lane Multi Pass is the main skip-the-line — roughly $25–$40/person/day (about $34 typical), and one purchase works across BOTH parks.
  • You hold one reservation at a time; book the next after you redeem it or after 2 hours pass. It also includes your PhotoPass ride/character photos.
  • Lightning Lane Single Pass is pay-per-ride for the two highest-demand rides (Rise of the Resistance ~$15–$35, and Radiator Springs Racers) — not included in Multi Pass.
  • Worth it? For a first-time family on a busy day, yes — it meaningfully cuts standby on Indiana Jones, Space Mountain and Guardians. On a true low-crowd weekday you can often just rope-drop and skip it.
  • Everything runs through the Disneyland mobile app — link your tickets and set it up before you arrive, with your whole party under one account.

Spend less

Where tickets are actually cheaper

  • Multi-day math is the biggest saver: a 3–5 day ticket costs far less per day than two single-day tickets. Staying 3+ days? Buy multi-day.
  • Cheapest dates: 1-day prices are tiered $104–$224 by date, with a near-record 56 days at the $104 floor in 2026 — most in September and November. Aim for Tue/Wed/Thu in a non-peak month.
  • Authorized resellers like Get Away Today run 2026 promos (e.g. adults-at-kids'-prices on 3-day+ tickets, or a 5th-day-free). Verify the current offer at booking.
  • Costco stopped selling Disneyland tickets/packages in 2025 — don't count on it.
  • Skip the Park Hopper add-on as a first-timer with one park's worth of energy — only worth it if you'll finish a park early or want Cars Land at night + Disneyland fireworks.
  • Free with admission: character meets, parades, fireworks, walk-through attractions and live shows. Bring a refillable bottle — counter-service spots give free cups of ice water.

When to go

Lowest-crowd days

  • Lowest-crowd months: January (after the holidays), February, April, August, September and November.
  • Days: Mon–Thu beat weekends; Sunday is usually calmer than Saturday.
  • Avoid holidays and school breaks (Thanksgiving, Christmas/New Year, spring break, summer peak) and Labor Day spillover.
  • Myth check: October is no longer a slow month — Halloween Time draws real crowds.

Know before you go

Practical tips

  • No clear-bag rule (that's a stadium thing), but all bags are searched at security — keep them small to move faster.
  • Strollers are allowed but must be no larger than ~31" × 52"; wagons are not permitted. (Confirm current dimensions on Disney's site.)
  • Use Mobile Order in the app for quick-service meals — pick a return window and skip the order line, especially midday.
  • On-site hotel guests get one free anytime Lightning Lane per stay (the 2026 replacement for Early Entry).
  • Measure your kid at home and know their height number; a free 'rider switch' lets both adults ride while one waits with a too-short child.
