What's the calmest beach for toddlers in Southern California?
Look for protected, harbor-side coves with little surf: Baby Beach in Dana Point, Mother's Beach in Marina del Rey, Mother's Beach in Long Beach (Alamitos Bay), and La Jolla Shores all have gentle, shallow water that's far friendlier for little kids than the open-ocean beach breaks.
Which SoCal beaches have the best tide pools?
Go at low tide for Crystal Cove and Little Corona (Corona del Mar) in OC, Heisler Park / Treasure Island in Laguna Beach, Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro, and the La Jolla / Point Loma areas in San Diego. Check a tide chart first — see our tide pools guide for the timing.
When's the best time to go to the beach in SoCal?
Locals know about 'June Gloom' — from roughly May through July, the coast is often overcast until late morning or midday, so don't be surprised if it's gray at 9am. For sun, go midday, or aim for late August through October (the warmest, clearest beach weather). On summer weekends, arrive early — beach lots fill by 9–10am.
Which beaches have fire pits?
Huntington Beach (Surf City), Bolsa Chica, Dockweiler (near LAX), and Corona del Mar are the classic fire-ring beaches. They're first-come, first-served and go fast on summer evenings, so grab one early and check the current rules before you light up.
