Plans that beat the traffic

SoCal itineraries, day by day

The hardest part of a Southern California trip is the geography — LA punishes back-and-forth driving. These 5 plans cluster each day by area so you spend your time at the sights, not on the 405.

2 days

First-Timer SoCal Weekend

A tight 48-hour LA highlights trip — the sign, the beach, the skyline, zero wasted miles.

🏨 Where to base: Santa Monica (walkable, beachy, quick run to Hollywood).

🚗 Getting around: A car makes Day 1 far easier; car-free works via the Metro E Line + DASH shuttle.

Day 1

Hollywood & Griffith Park

  • Morning: Walk of Fame and the TCL Chinese Theatre on Hollywood Blvd.
  • Afternoon: Griffith Observatory — grounds, exhibits and the classic Hollywood Sign + city view.
  • Evening: Stay for sunset and a free telescope viewing, then dinner in Los Feliz.
  • 🍽️ Lunch on Hollywood Blvd; dinner in Los Feliz.

💡 Use the paid Observatory lot (enforced daily) or the ~50¢ DASH shuttle; arrive mid-afternoon to beat the sunset rush.

Day 2

Santa Monica & Venice

  • Morning: Santa Monica Pier, Pacific Park and the Third Street Promenade.
  • Afternoon: Bike or walk the beach path south to the Venice Boardwalk and canals.
  • Evening: Sunset over the Pacific; dinner on Abbot Kinney Blvd.
  • 🍽️ Beachfront lunch in Santa Monica; dinner on Abbot Kinney.

💡 Park once near the pier and bike to Venice — the beach path beats re-parking.

3 days

Three Days in Los Angeles

First-timers who want LA's icons — Hollywood, the beach, museums and skyline — without living on the freeway.

🏨 Where to base: Santa Monica (easy Westside) or Downtown/Hollywood (central, transit-connected).

🚗 Getting around: Rent a car for Days 1–2; Day 3's Downtown + Expo Park works car-free on the Metro E Line.

Day 1

Hollywood & Griffith Park

  • Morning: Walk of Fame, TCL Chinese Theatre, Ovation Hollywood for the sign view.
  • Afternoon: Drive up to Griffith Observatory — grounds, west-terrace views, exhibits.
  • Evening: Sunset + free telescope viewing, then dinner in Los Feliz or Thai Town.
  • 🍽️ Tacos/Thai on Hollywood Blvd; dinner in Los Feliz.

💡 Park in the paid Observatory lot (enforced Tue–Fri 12–10, Sat–Sun 10–10); arrive by mid-afternoon.

Day 2

Getty + Santa Monica + Venice

  • Morning: The Getty Center — book a free timed ticket; tram up for galleries + the Central Garden.
  • Afternoon: Santa Monica Pier, Pacific Park and the Third Street Promenade.
  • Evening: Beach path south to Venice Boardwalk and the canals; sunset.
  • 🍽️ Lunch on the Getty terrace; dinner on Abbot Kinney.

💡 Do the Getty first (morning) so you drive away from 405 gridlock, not into it. Getty parking is $25 and fills up — reserve.

Day 3

Downtown LA + Exposition Park

  • Morning: Grand Central Market breakfast, then The Broad (free, reserve) and the Arts District.
  • Afternoon: Exposition Park — California Science Center (free, Space Shuttle Endeavour) and the Natural History Museum.
  • Evening: Dinner in Little Tokyo or the Arts District.
  • 🍽️ Grand Central Market stalls; dinner in Little Tokyo.

💡 Use the Metro E (Expo) Line today — it links Downtown to Exposition Park and on to Santa Monica. (Swap in Universal Studios for a full park day if you prefer.)

5 days

Five Days in Southern California

A first SoCal week pairing LA's greatest hits with one day trip and a full Disneyland day.

🏨 Where to base: Nights 1–4 in Santa Monica or Downtown LA; for Day 5 overnight in Anaheim near Disneyland.

Day 2

  • Afternoon: Santa Monica Pier and beach.
  • Evening: Venice Boardwalk and canals.
  • 🍽️ Getty terrace; Abbot Kinney dinner.

  • Afternoon: Malibu Country Mart, or Old Town Pasadena & the Norton Simon.
  • Evening: Back to base for dinner.

  • Afternoon: Continue across Disneyland Park (and/or California Adventure); use the app for waits.
  • Evening: Fireworks, then Downtown Disney.
  • 🍽️ Quick-service in-park; Downtown Disney dinner.

💡 Anaheim is 60–90+ min from LA in rush hour — overnight in Anaheim the night before to maximize park time.

7 days

7-Day LA + San Diego Road Trip

Both metros plus the OC coast, with the scenic PCH drive as a highlight, not a slog.

🏨 Where to base: Nights 1–3 in LA (Santa Monica/Downtown); Nights 4–6 in San Diego (Gaslamp/Little Italy or La Jolla).

  • 🍽️ Old Town Mexican brunch.

💡 Plan the drive around rush hour.

4 days

  • Morning: Cars Land and Pixar Pier at rope drop.
