Los Angeles — Metro rail, bus & bike
LA has more transit than its reputation suggests. The LA Metro rail and bus network reaches Downtown, Hollywood, Santa Monica, Pasadena, Long Beach and the airport, and you pay with a reloadable TAP card. Metro Bike Share covers central neighborhoods. It won't replace a car everywhere, but for your first weeks it gets you to a lot.
Regional trains — Metrolink & Amtrak
For longer hops without driving, Metrolink commuter rail links LA, Orange County, the Inland Empire and beyond, and Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner runs a gorgeous coastal route between San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, LA, and San Diego. Both are great car-free family day trips in themselves.
Orange County — OC Bus
OCTA's OC Bus covers Orange County, and Metrolink stops connect cities like Anaheim, Santa Ana and Irvine. OC is more spread out and suburban, so a car becomes more useful here sooner — but you can still reach the beaches, Disneyland and the main districts by transit and rideshare at first.
San Diego — Trolley & MTS
San Diego's MTS Trolley and bus system is genuinely useful — the Trolley reaches Downtown, Old Town, the border and more, and a day pass makes exploring easy. Pair it with a walk around Balboa Park or the waterfront for a car-free family day.

Frequently asked questions
Can I explore Southern California without a car?
Yes, especially at first. LA Metro (rail and bus, paid with a TAP card), Metrolink and the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner trains, OC Bus, and San Diego's Trolley cover a lot of ground, and rideshare fills the gaps. Some neighborhoods — like Santa Monica, Koreatown, Downtown LA, Long Beach and Downtown San Diego — are walkable enough to live in car-free for a while.
What's the most scenic car-free trip in SoCal?
The Amtrak Pacific Surfliner along the coast is a favorite — it runs right by the ocean between San Diego, LA, Santa Barbara and beyond, so the ride itself is part of the day out. It's a lovely, low-stress family outing while you're still getting your bearings.
Will I eventually need a car in SoCal?
Most residents do get one, especially in the more spread-out suburbs of Orange County and the Inland Empire. But you don't need it on day one — transit and rideshare can carry you through your first weeks while you settle in and sort out your California license.
