  A truly gorgeous place to hike. We especially love the palm oasis, it is a sight to behold :) The bathrooms at the visitor center are always clean, if you are planning on visiting make sure to purchase a day pass at the visitor center, or at the gate entering into the oasis parking lot. Make sure to display your pass in the window at all times. Check the weather before you go, wear a hat, sunscreen and bug spray before you set off down the trail. Also, make sure to carry lots of water, more than you would normally carry for a hike. Wear shoes that are comfortable and protect your ankles. Make sure they have good soles that arent slick. You will walk over boulders and rocks and wearing the wrong shoes can lead to rolling an ankle or slipping. There are 2 routes, the main route and the alternate. The main route is a wider, less rocky path. The alternate route involves walking up and down hilly inclines and moving past some rocks and boulders. Carrying trekking poles makes for a steadier walk. When you reach the palm trees, you will pass a couple of spots where you have to walk across some shallow running water. There are stepping stones you can step on, but some of them move when you step on them and you might get your shoes wet, so plan accordingly. Truly a lovely hike :)

  Very nice hike with great rock formations and an oasis with water at the end. There is an alternative trail, so it doesn’t have to be a full out and back trail. The restroom at the trailhead is interesting with an open too stone design. It’s harder than the distance suggests because there is a lot of rock scrambling. It’s $10 for day use.

  This was an absolutely beautiful scenic hike. We unfortunately did not see any rams, but saw lots of their droppings! We had a 20 month old with us, she was able to walk maybe half of the hike. But had to be carried for a lot of it, due to the very rocky terrain. Not stroller friendly. Not dog friendly. The trail head did have one of the coolest bathrooms i have ever used/seen. Parking was tight, but there was spots available on a Saturday in January.

  Drove 2 hours from San Diego. Visited the visitor center to get info and map. Drove about 5 minutes to this trailhead. It was around 1pm. Started hiking trailhead to Palm Canyon. No one else was around at trailhead. Hike to canyon took 1 hour. Met about five others going back. Canyon was dry. No water.

  Beautiful hike, but more difficult than I expected because I didn’t bring enough water. BRING 3X WATER you think you need ON THE TRAIL. They recommend one gallon per person MINIMUM - I regret I didn’t have a bottle big enough. You should assume: -It will be HOT even in winter (80 deg at noon in January) -There will be NO shade at all (except as the sun begins to set behind the mountains) -There will be warm, dry wind and dust (which will make you even more parched) -You will need to watch your feet the majority of the time because there are lots of rocks and boulders along the trail -You will need to use your hands to crawl over rocks or through narrow passages between rocks (see image) -The trail is marked in a limited way so pay close attention to not get lost IMPORTANT NOTE about the bathrooms by the main trailhead: There ARE toilets with privacy walls, but NO roof and NO doors. Toilets are very clean with ample toilet paper. But note that there is NO sink or soap, so plan to bring your own hand wipes. (see image)
