Things to do in La Mesa
Harry Griffen Regional Park
At 53 acres this is the biggest park in La Mesa — playground, wide lawns, a jogging path, shaded picnic tables with barbecues, and a dog park split into three sections by dog size. The amphitheater hosts the free summer concerts, so arrive well ahead of start time on those evenings.

Collier Park (La Mesa)
La Mesa's oldest park reopened in 2024 after a full rebuild, with a brand-new playground, nature trails, shaded seating and shared tennis and pickleball courts. At under eight acres it's easy to keep eyes on younger kids while they roam.

Twenty-two acres in the middle of town holding the recreation center and the city's municipal pool, plus ball fields and a walking trail. Check the schedule before heading over — the pool runs seasonal hours with reserved lap and lesson blocks.

A privately maintained hilltop park with a stone amphitheater, short trails and one of the best all-round views in East County, free to the public. The summit lot holds only about a dozen cars — on clear evenings park in the lower lot on Vivera Drive and walk up.

A restored 1894 railway depot with a steam locomotive and rolling stock parked outside. The trains can be seen at any hour, but go during docent hours if you want the kids inside the depot hearing the stories.

McKinney House Museum
The 1908 home of La Mesa's first mayor, furnished to show village life a century ago. A twenty-minute stop best combined with a walk through La Mesa Village.

The county branch on Allison Avenue sits right in La Mesa Village and runs regular storytimes and school-break programs. Village street parking is metered and tight — the public structure a block over is easier on farmers market days.
