Things to Do in El Cajon with Kids

El Cajon is a sunny, family-dense East County hub where kids cool off at the Wells Park splash pad and summer concerts fill Prescott Promenade. Just up the road, Mt. Helix Park offers an easy summit drive with panoramic valley views, and the Water Conservation Garden and nearby Cuyamaca foothills make it a launchpad for outdoor days.

📍 Where El Cajon is

El Cajon sits in San Diego, Southern California. Nearest major airport: San Diego Intl (~14 mi / 23 km). It's roughly 114 mi (184 km) from Downtown LA and 13 mi (21 km) from San Diego — SoCal traffic can make a drive take far longer than the distance suggests, so plan around it.

💡 Local tip: Friday-night summer concerts at Prescott Promenade downtown are free — bring low chairs and arrive early for shade.

Parks & Hiking

The Water Conservation Garden

Nearly six acres of themed demonstration gardens on the Cuyamaca College campus, including a native plant garden, a vegetable plot and a dirt play area kids actually get to dig in. Parking is free on site, and the second Friday makes admission free too.

Suggested donation; free the 2nd Friday monthly
Museums & Learning

Heritage of the Americas Museum

A small four-gallery museum covering Native American and pre-Columbian artifacts, fossils, minerals and western art. It's directly next door to the Water Conservation Garden, so the two make one natural trip with free parking.

Low admission; young children free
Parks & Hiking

Wells Park

A city park with a paved loop for walkers, an outdoor fitness court, a mini-pitch soccer arena, half-courts and a dog park. The recreation center on site runs youth classes and camps if you need something structured.

Parks & Hiking

Kennedy Recreation Center & Skate Park

El Cajon's main skate park, alongside a recreation centre running youth programs, with picnic areas and open turf for siblings who aren't skating. The concrete gets hot enough by mid-afternoon in summer that mornings are the sensible slot.

Free; helmet and pads required
Parks & Hiking

Hillside Park

Nineteen acres of mostly natural, multi-level terrain in Fletcher Hills, with trails through a eucalyptus grove up top and a big grass field and restrooms below. Park at the lower lot if you have a stroller — the upper section is uneven and steep in places.

Free
Arts & Culture

Knox House Museum

Built in 1876 and the oldest commercial building in El Cajon, covering the valley's ranching origins. It opens only two Saturdays a month, so pair it with the downtown farmers market rather than making a special trip.

Free
Museums & Learning

El Cajon Library

The largest county branch in East County, with a substantial children's area, storytimes and a world-languages collection that reflects El Cajon's communities. It's a block from Prescott Promenade, so it slots easily around a downtown event.
