Things to do in National City
Pepper Park
A bayfront park on the Sweetwater Channel with a fishing pier, playground, picnic tables and public art — an underrated stretch of waterfront. It sits inside a working port district, so follow Tidelands Avenue south past the truck traffic; the park itself is quiet and the pier is the draw.

Kimball Park
National City's central park, with a playground, ball fields, an amphitheater, a dog park and the city's only skate park, right beside the public library. Park on the library side and you can do playground plus story time in one trip.

Las Palmas Park
A big grassy park on the east side with playgrounds, barbecues, tennis courts, a recreation centre and the municipal pool for open swim and lessons. Pool hours are limited and change by season, so call before driving over on a hot afternoon.

El Toyon Park
A hillside park at 4th and Highland with a playground, dog park, sports fields and a recreation centre, recently upgraded by the city. It's on a slope — the upper lot off East 4th Street puts you closest to the play areas.

A restored tidal creek and wetland tucked behind the Westside neighborhood, with interpretive signs and native planting — a real slice of salt marsh in the middle of a city. It's compact, so pair it with something else nearby; check for family volunteer planting days, which kids tend to love.

A seven-acre organic teaching garden on a historic estate, with cooking and gardening classes for families. The free third-Saturday open garden needs no registration and tours start mid-morning — the easiest way in.
