Reviewers repeat one warning: cholla and other cactus line the trail and they grab. One got a hand full of spines while taking a photo. It is a real climb, with steps cut into the steepest parts, and narrow in places. A reviewer says it is not suited to very small children, though a nine-year-old managed.
A three-quarter-mile self-guided loop with fourteen numbered markers matched to a free trailhead pamphlet, past cholla, beavertail, barrel and hedgehog cactus. The climb is short but rocky — closed-toe shoes, and keep small kids well clear of the cholla, which drops spined segments onto the trail.

I know about jumping cholla but have never felt their wrath 😣 taking a picture of a Peninsula Fishhook cactus from the ground up... When I moved my hand to click the camera button the dang little Cholla grabbed my thumb and first two fingers! We hiked the trail backwards so we had just started our hike. You might think about putting a comb and needle nose pliers in your first aid ⛑️ kit! We had a knife so I cut most of the spines leaving as much length as possible but not get in the way of hiking 🙃🥹🥴😜 The hike was beautiful! Lots of flowers and birds. No Big Horns🙁 but we did see hummingbirds feeding at the 'Hummingbird Bush's. The hike is basically go up the hill across a little ways and then back down the hill. It is a decent climb but they have done well with the trail with steps in the really steep areas.

If you are staying at the Tamarisk Grove Campground this is an excellent hiker for sunrise. It’s short and easy, and gives you an incredible view of the sun rising over the cacti. Pick up a trail guide by the ranger station before you head out and watch out for cacti.
