A Riverside County center with a small interpretive museum, live-animal and Cahuilla history exhibits, and gentle kid-friendly nature loops through the pines — the perfect first stop to get oriented before bigger hikes. Bring a light layer even in summer; the center sits around 5,500 feet and mornings stay cool.

This forested county park just west of town has easy nature trails, picnic spots and a well-loved campground shaded by tall conifers — a relaxed, uncrowded place to let kids roam and spot deer or acorn woodpeckers. Day-use is first-come, first-served, so arrive early on summer weekends.
Day-use varies; camping ~$30–$35/nightErnie Maxwell Scenic Trail
A mellow, mostly flat 2.5-mile-each-way trail through shady pines and cedars — one of the best beginner and family hikes in the San Jacinto Mountains, with no hiking permit required (unlike the steeper trails nearby). Park at Humber Park with a National Forest Adventure Pass, and pack water since altitude dries you out.
