The paved Forest Service trailhead at the top of Fern Valley, with vault toilets, for both the gentle Ernie Maxwell Scenic Trail and the steep Devil's Slide Trail. Buy an Adventure Pass before you arrive (Big 5, REI or shops in town). Ernie Maxwell needs no permit, but Devil's Slide needs a free day-use wilderness permit, limited on summer weekends from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
