Spring Valley County Park
A shady county park with two playgrounds, a basketball court, twenty-six picnic tables and a looped walkway where seven laps make a mile. It shares a lot with the community center, so weekday mornings get busy with programs — late afternoon is calmer.

A compact two-acre neighborhood park with play equipment and picnic space, easy to slot into an errand run. There's no shade structure over the play area, so mornings are far more comfortable in summer.

An 1856 adobe that was home to the historian Hubert Howe Bancroft, now a National Historic Landmark and small museum. It's a thirty-to-forty-five-minute visit and the volunteer docents are the real draw, so go when someone's on hand to talk.

Dictionary Hill Open Space Preserve
A 175-acre preserve with a 2.1-mile moderate climb to a summit looking out over Sweetwater Reservoir, Point Loma and Cowles Mountain. Park at the end of South Barcelona Street; there's no water, no restrooms and no shade, so go early.

The county branch on Kempton Street runs children's storytimes and after-school programs, a short walk from Spring Valley County Park. It's closed Saturdays and Sundays, which catches a lot of families out — plan a weekday.
