Things to Do in Spring Valley with Kids

Spring Valley is a large unincorporated community east of the 125, mostly residential streets spread across hills between Sweetwater Reservoir and La Mesa. It isn't a destination town, but it holds a genuine surprise — an 1856 adobe that's a National Historic Landmark — alongside two solid county parks and a hilltop preserve with 360-degree views.

📍 Where Spring Valley is

Spring Valley sits in San Diego, Southern California. Nearest major airport: San Diego Intl (~12 mi / 19 km). It's roughly 116 mi (187 km) from Downtown LA and 10 mi (16 km) from San Diego — SoCal traffic can make a drive take far longer than the distance suggests, so plan around it.

💡 Local tip: Treat it as a morning walk plus a bit of history rather than a full day out. The Dictionary Hill climb has no water, shade or restrooms, so go early. And note the library here is closed weekends, which catches families out.

Bancroft Ranch House Museum

An 1856 adobe that was home to the historian Hubert Howe Bancroft, now a National Historic Landmark and small museum. It's a thirty-to-forty-five-minute visit and the volunteer docents are the real draw, so go when someone's on hand to talk.
