🧭 Moving to Los Angeles

Just moved to Alhambra?

Alhambra is a dense, walkable-in-parts SGV city just east of Los Angeles, with a lively Main Street, a Sunday farmers market and well-known Chinese and Vietnamese food on Valley Boulevard and Main Street.

Curated by Simir Shah

Who lands here

A very mixed community: Chinese American and other Asian American families, Latino families, Cal State LA students and staff, and people who want SGV food and a shorter commute to Downtown LA.

The vibe

Older, close-in neighborhoods with a mix of apartments and bungalows, an active downtown and practical everyday shopping. Overnight street parking requires a city permit, which surprises many new arrivals.

Schools

Alhambra Unified serves Alhambra and most of Monterey Park, and its high schools also draw from parts of San Gabriel and Rosemead. Assignments follow your street address, so use the district's enrollment page and School Locator before choosing housing.

Getting around

Driving is common, but the city's 25-cent ACT buses link downtown with Cal State LA's Metrolink and Metro J Line station, and Metro buses run along Valley Boulevard and Main Street.

Finding your community

The city-run Alhambra Library keeps Chinese, Spanish and Vietnamese collections and offers baby and toddler storytimes. City alerts come through Alhambra Alerts. See our community guides.
