Rancho Bernardo Community Park
A 38-acre park with two playgrounds, ball fields, courts, an indoor gym and wide picnic lawns under mature trees. It's also the easiest parking for the Lake Hodges trails, so little kids can play while older ones hike.

Bernardo Bay Trail (Lake Hodges)
A mostly flat lakeside trail through oak and scrub, from a large free lot on West Bernardo Drive. Go early — there's almost no shade after mid-morning and inland summer temperatures run fifteen degrees above the coast.

A roughly 7-mile round trip climbing to a wide view over Lake Hodges and the inland valleys — realistic for kids around eight and up. Carry more water than feels necessary; there's no shade and no water on the route.

One of Southern California's oldest continuously operating wineries, now mostly a village of artisan shops, a coffee roaster and a casual Italian kitchen on shady grounds. Daytime is genuinely family-friendly — go for the shops and the outdoor tables, and skip the evening events, which skew adult.
