📍 Where Ocean Beach is
Ocean Beach sits in San Diego, Southern California. Nearest major airport: San Diego Intl (~3 mi / 6 km). It's roughly 107 mi (172 km) from Downtown LA and 6 mi (9 km) from San Diego — SoCal traffic can make a drive take far longer than the distance suggests, so plan around it.

Things to do in Ocean Beach
Dog Beach
A leash-free stretch of sand at the north end of Ocean Beach where dogs have run since 1972 — one of the best free hours of entertainment for kids who love animals even if you don't own one. Park in the lot off Voltaire Street and bring a towel; the sand near the river mouth is damp and dogs shake off wherever they like.
FreeRobb Field
A large riverside park with a skate park, playgrounds, courts, ball fields and shaded picnic tables along the San Diego River. The skate park is the draw for older kids — helmets and pads are required, so bring them or you'll be turned away at the gate.
FreeOcean Beach Tide Pools
Below the bluffs at the south end of the beach, rocky shelves fill with anemones, crabs and sea stars at low tide. Go at a minus tide or there's genuinely nothing to see — and wear closed-toe shoes, because the rocks are slick.
FreeNewport Avenue Antique District
Several blocks of antique arcades and thrift shops that work surprisingly well as a rainy-day wander with kids old enough not to grab. Park in the free lot at the west end of Newport near the seawall and walk east — street parking is metered and scarce.
Free to browseOcean Beach Athletic Area Playground
A small grassy park with play equipment set back a block from the sand — useful when the beach wind gets to be too much for little kids. There's a public restroom here, worth knowing when the beach ones are jammed on a summer weekend.
