Valley Center is a spread-out agricultural community in the hills northeast of Escondido — avocado and citrus groves, horse property and tribal land, with no real downtown. Families make the drive for one specific thing: Bates Nut Farm, a San Diego County tradition that's genuinely good year-round rather than only in October.

Bates Nut Farm

A working farm store with a farm zoo of goats, sheep, alpacas and ducks, a fudge counter and big shaded picnic lawns — a San Diego County tradition for generations and genuinely good year-round, not just in October. Bring a picnic and quarters for feed; October brings the county's largest pumpkin patch and enormous crowds, so go on a weekday if you can.

Valley Center History Museum

A volunteer-run museum covering local Native American history, ranching and the pioneer era, with an unusually good collection for a town this size. Hours are limited to a few days a week, so call before making the drive out.

Hellhole Canyon Preserve

A county preserve with about thirteen miles of trails through chaparral, oak and seasonal creek beds. It gets brutally hot May through September — this is a cool-season hike, and the shorter loops near the trailhead are the realistic option with kids.
