Things to do in Rancho Mirage
Children's Discovery Museum of the Desert
This hands-on museum off Gerald Ford Drive is built for little hands, with a pretend grocery store, art studio and climbing structures that keep toddlers through early-elementary kids busy for hours. It's fully indoor and air-conditioned — a lifesaver on triple-digit summer days. Morning visits tend to be calmer before school and camp groups arrive.
~$19.95/person; $5 Museums for All with EBTSunnylands Center & Gardens
The former Annenberg estate opens nine acres of desert gardens with more than a mile of walking paths, plus a free 20-minute film and art exhibits. Admission and parking are always free — one of the best-value outings in the valley. Come right at 8:30am in the cooler months, since the gardens close for the summer heat from June into mid-September.
Free (Center & Gardens admission and parking)Rancho Mirage Library and Observatory
A rare combo: a modern public library paired with a real observatory that hosts free public exploration nights and daytime solar-viewing tours for all ages, no library card required. Kids can peer through the telescope on scheduled evenings, with no registration needed. Evening sessions are the coolest time to visit — literally — since desert nights drop well below the daytime heat.
FreeRancho Mirage Community Park
This 20-plus-acre park on San Jacinto Drive has a shaded children's playground, a life-sized fire engine to climb, a water feature and an amphitheater that hosts free music-in-the-park nights. Aim for early morning or after sunset in summer, when the playground surfaces and equipment are far cooler to the touch.
FreeThe River at Rancho Mirage
This open-air center on Highway 111 wraps shops and restaurants around fountains and waterfalls in a 30-acre landscaped setting, with a 15-screen cinema and family-friendly spots. It's free to wander, and kids love watching the cascading water features. The shaded walkways and evening breeze make it a comfortable after-dinner stroll once the sun goes down.
