Things to Do in Rancho Mirage with Kids

Rancho Mirage is the polished heart of the Coachella Valley, and it's surprisingly family-rich: the hands-on, air-conditioned Children's Discovery Museum of the Desert, the free desert gardens of Sunnylands, and a genuinely special public library paired with an observatory that hosts free stargazing nights.

💡 Local tip: Everything outdoors is a beat-the-heat morning or evening activity in summer — Sunnylands' gardens actually close June through mid-September. The library observatory's evening stargazing is the coolest (literally) way to end a desert day.

Children's Discovery Museum of the Desert

This hands-on museum off Gerald Ford Drive is built for little hands, with a pretend grocery store, art studio and climbing structures that keep toddlers through early-elementary kids busy for hours. A rare combo: a modern public library paired with a real observatory that hosts free public exploration nights and daytime solar-viewing tours for all ages, no library card required. Kids can peer through the telescope on scheduled evenings, with no registration needed. Evening sessions are the coolest time to visit — literally — since desert nights drop well below the daytime heat.
