Lindo Lake County Park
Home to the only natural lake in San Diego County, this easygoing park is a local favorite for a stroll around the water, with a boathouse, playgrounds, picnic areas and a flat loop path that's stroller- and little-kid-friendly. Bring snacks and let the kids watch the ducks and turtles.
FreeLake Jennings
A scenic reservoir with year-round camping, shore fishing and weekend boat rentals, plus tens of thousands of pounds of trout and catfish stocked annually. Fishing and boating are best Friday through Sunday when the bait shop and dock are open. Pack a hat and water since shade is limited along the shoreline.

A charming herb farm and garden nursery tucked into Flinn Springs, with fragrant garden paths, a soap shop and a peaceful setting kids love to wander. Admission is free, so it's a lovely low-key morning outing paired with a treat from the cafe. Check their events page for seasonal happenings before you go.

California's first Native American museum on a reservation, dedicated to sharing local Kumeyaay culture through artifacts, baskets and hands-on exhibits. Admission is free and the space is welcoming for curious kids. Call ahead if you'd like to arrange a guided group tour.
FreeLouis A. Stelzer County Park
A shady oak-dotted park at the edge of Wildcat Canyon with easy nature trails, picnic spots and a fun accessible loop for younger hikers. The Stelzer Ridge and Riparian trails offer a manageable taste of East County wilderness. Bring a picnic and plenty of water, and watch for the resident wildlife.

An 88-acre park beneath the towering granite face of El Cajon Mountain in the San Diego River valley, with big grassy meadows, playgrounds and shade from massive oaks — a great spot for a family picnic and open-space running-around. Pedestrians enter from sunrise, but you'll need the gate open after 9:30am to park.
