Things to Do in Mount Laguna with Kids

Mount Laguna is a tiny pine-forest settlement at about 6,000 feet in the Cleveland National Forest, roughly an hour east of San Diego on Sunrise Highway. It's essentially a lodge, a general store, a visitor center and a great deal of trail — but it's the only place in the county that reliably gets snow, and in summer it runs twenty-five degrees cooler than the valleys.

📍 Where Mount Laguna is

Mount Laguna sits in Southern California. Nearest major airport: San Diego Intl (~46 mi / 74 km). It's roughly 133 mi (214 km) from Downtown LA and 44 mi (72 km) from San Diego — SoCal traffic can make a drive take far longer than the distance suggests, so plan around it.

💡 Local tip: Treat it as a half-day built around one hike plus the store. Most trailheads need a $5 Adventure Pass, sold at the visitor center — whose hours are limited and seasonal, so buy ahead if you can. Cell service is patchy; download directions before you leave the interstate.

Day Trips

Laguna Mountain Visitor Center

A small volunteer-run center where kids can handle pelts, antlers and rocks, and where you buy the Adventure Pass required at most trailheads up here. Hours are genuinely limited and seasonal, so don't count on it for your parking pass without checking.

Parks & Hiking

Big Laguna Trail

A gentle trail through pine forest and open meadow past Big Laguna Lake — flat enough for grade-schoolers and one of the prettiest easy walks in the county. The lake is seasonal and often dry by late summer, so set expectations before you go.

Day Trips

Desert View Picnic Area

Picnic tables on the edge of the escarpment with a straight drop-off view across the Anza-Borrego desert, plus a walkable section of the Pacific Crest Trail. It's windy and the drop is unfenced in places, so keep small children close to the tables.

Laguna Mountain Lodge & Store

The general store at the centre of town selling snacks, firewood, sleds in winter and basic supplies — and it's the last real supply point for miles. Cell service is patchy up here, so download your directions before you leave the interstate.

Day Trips

Sunrise Highway Snow Play

After a winter storm the pullouts along Sunrise Highway become San Diego County's main sledding spot — the only place in the county that reliably gets snow. Strictly weather-dependent: check road conditions and chain requirements, and go the day after a storm rather than during one.
