Desert View Picnic Area

Mount Laguna, CA

★★★★★4.8(214 Google reviews)

Picnic tables on the edge of the escarpment with a straight drop-off view across the Anza-Borrego desert, plus a walkable section of the Pacific Crest Trail. It's windy and the drop is unfenced in places, so keep small children close to the tables.

This picnic area was really nice place to stop. It has tables and fire pits. The bathrooms were available and clean. There are trails they lead to amazing views of the mountains and desert below.

We sat on a picnic bench and marveled at the sky. No light, just tree-lined views and a few insect friends that were interested in our light. It's very dark, so a perfect place for stargazing during the new moon. Only one car drove by while we were out there.

Enjoyed the quiet setting, we set up day camp and enjoyed a nice warm fire, hikers passing by a lot, small easy parking, trails near. Small place, peaceful and secluded, pine trees all around, spots with picnic benches and fire rings, restroom building is always closed. In the evening, the temperature quickly drops into the 40s, no overnight camping.

A great place to take a walk off the Sunrise Highway along the ridge of the Laguna Mountains. There is an easy scenic loop trail from the parking area and it also connects with the Pacific Crest Trail. There are sweeping views of the Imperial Valley desert and the Salton Sea to the east. You need to display an Adventure Pass or National Park pass when parking in the area.
