Julian Pioneer Museum

California Wolf Center
This conservation facility south of town lets families see ambassador gray and Mexican wolf packs while learning about recovery efforts in North America. Tours are reservation-only and meet at the K Q Ranch Road facility, not the downtown nature store, so book ahead and plan the extra drive.

Volcan Mountain Wilderness Preserve
A free, no-pass trailhead just north of town where the summit trail climbs through oak and pine to sweeping views from the desert to the coast. Start early on hot days — the lower stretch is exposed — and keep an eye on the clock since the ranger locks the gate at sundown.

At 4,200 feet in a shady forest of pines and oaks, this county park has around 11 miles of family-friendly trails plus campsites and cabins if you want to stay the night. The three short loop trails are almost fully shaded and perfect for little legs, with a small $5 day-use parking fee.

Julian Farm and Orchard
Just west of Julian in Santa Ysabel, this working farm packs in a petting zoo, hayrides and seasonal U-Pick apples, pumpkins, berries and flowers. Apple-picking runs on reservations in the fall, so book your Apple Tour ahead for September and October and get there early on weekends.
