California Wolf Center
This conservation facility south of town lets families see ambassador gray and Mexican wolf packs while learning about recovery efforts in North America. Tours are reservation-only and meet at the K Q Ranch Road facility, not the downtown nature store, so book ahead and plan the extra drive.

A free, no-pass trailhead just north of town where the summit trail climbs through oak and pine to sweeping views from the desert to the coast. Start early on hot days — the lower stretch is exposed — and keep an eye on the clock since the ranger locks the gate at sundown.

At 4,200 feet in a shady forest of pines and oaks, this county park has around 11 miles of family-friendly trails plus campsites and cabins if you want to stay the night. The three short loop trails are almost fully shaded and perfect for little legs, with a small $5 day-use parking fee.

Just west of Julian in Santa Ysabel, this working farm packs in a petting zoo, hayrides and seasonal U-Pick apples, pumpkins, berries and flowers. Apple-picking runs on reservations in the fall, so book your Apple Tour ahead for September and October and get there early on weekends.

Agua Caliente County Park (hot-spring pools)
This desert county park has a Julian mailing address but is about an hour east of town in Anza-Borrego, off County Road S2. It has a shallow children's pool and an outdoor pool fed by natural springs, while the indoor heated pool is limited to ages 14 and up. It's closed in summer, and dogs aren't allowed on trails or pool decks.

Cuyamaca Rancho State Park
A pine-and-oak state park along Highway 79 south of Julian, with Paso Picacho campground, picnic areas and a self-guided Paso Picacho Nature Trail. Dogs are not allowed on trails (only campgrounds, picnic areas, paved roads and the Cuyamaca Peak Fire Road). In snow season, check Caltrans QuickMap and the park line (760-765-3020) before driving, and park only in legal turnouts, never on the highway shoulder.

Santa Ysabel East County Preserve
This county preserve has oak woodland and rolling grassland just north of town off Farmer Road, with picnic tables at the staging area. Its loops wander through cattle pasture and across creeks, and there's no water on the trails. The preserves may close after heavy rain, and leashed dogs are allowed.

Stonewall Peak Trail
This trail climbs from Paso Picacho campground to the 5,700-foot summit, about 2 miles each way, with wide views from the granite summit. It's moderate and steep in places, and a good first summit for kids around 7 and up. Bring layers, because the top is windy and cold in winter.

Lake Cuyamaca
A mountain fishing lake with rental boats, a kayak launch and a lakeside restaurant, The Pub at Lake Cuyamaca. Anyone 16 and up also needs a California fishing license, and anglers with a lake permit skip the day-use fee. Kids 5 and under fish free with a paying adult.

Volcan Valley Apple Farm (U-pick)
This orchard on Julian Orchards Drive grows apples on trellises at arm height, so kids can pick without ladders, and the rows are wide enough for strollers and wagons. Shaded picnic tables and cold cider are on site, and leashed dogs are welcome. Opening day depends on the crop and is posted on the website about 10 days ahead.

Julian Pioneer Museum
A small, charming trove of gold-rush and pioneer-era relics, old photos and mining tools right as you roll into town on Highway 78. It's an easy, affordable stop that gives kids context for the mine tours, and little ones get in free.

Julian Library (SD County Library)
This San Diego County Library branch sits on Highway 78 just east of downtown. The October 2026 calendar shows Baby Storytime on Mondays at 10:30am, LEGO Club Monday afternoons and an after-school craft on Tuesdays, but check the branch calendar for the current schedule. It's closed on weekends, so plan a library stop for a weekday visit.
FreeJulian Mining Company
This roadside attraction on Highway 78 offers gold panning, gem sluicing, an ore-cart train ride and a pirate treasure pit, which suits kids about 4 to 10. It's different from the Eagle and High Peak mine tour in town. It's open weekends only and the website doesn't post prices, so call 760-765-8680 before making a special trip.

Eagle Mining Company
Just up C Street at the edge of downtown, this genuine 1870s hard-rock gold mine gives a guided walk through about 1,000 feet of lantern-lit tunnels, and kids get to try gold panning. Bring a light jacket even in summer — the mine stays cool underground — and remember it's cash only.

Julian 4th of July Parade
This small-town parade on Main Street has antique cars, vintage tractors, marching bands and a giant American flag carried down the street. Families line the sidewalks early for a spot, and street parking disappears, so arrive well ahead. Details are posted each year at julianparade.com.
