Things to Do in Julian with Kids

Julian is a mountain time-capsule an hour east of the coast — a Gold Rush town turned apple country at 4,200 feet. Kids pan for gold and walk the lantern-lit tunnels of an 1870s mine, meet wolves at the California Wolf Center, pick apples in fall, and everyone eats a slab of the famous Julian apple pie.

📍 Where Julian is

Julian sits in San Diego, Southern California. Nearest major airport: San Diego Intl (~42 mi / 67 km). It's roughly 116 mi (187 km) from Downtown LA and 41 mi (66 km) from San Diego — SoCal traffic can make a drive take far longer than the distance suggests, so plan around it.

Visiting? See SoCal at a glance, getting around and which airport.

💡 Local tip: Fall (September–October) is peak apple season and gets very busy — book U-pick reservations ahead and go early. It's a winding mountain drive, and the mine stays cool underground so bring a jacket (and cash — the mine is cash-only).
