Ramona Grasslands County Preserve

Ramona, CA

★★★★★4.8(322 Google reviews)

Nearly 4,000 acres of rolling grassland and valley oaks, with an easy, mostly flat four-mile loop from the Highland Valley Road staging area. There's no shade and no water out there: go early, and skip it entirely on hot days.

Mellow hike. Professor Richard Carrico talks a lot about Ramona Grasslands as it was and IS an important Kumuyaay village site called Pa’mu, and yet NO historical or cultural markers are present. San Diego County parks should step up to provide context to this beautiful grassland area. It's quite unfortunate that the public is missing out on the larger picture beyond nature and recreation. Otherwise this is a tame hike, doable for kids and all activity levels. Bring shade/sunscreen. There are portable bathrooms at the trailhead.

Very easy trails with minimal elevation gain on both loops. Best to go after a rain so its green

A couple fun, mellow loops available in the preserve. It's a great place to see more wildlife than you would think without getting more miles between you and everything else... Overall probably more of a walk than a hike but appreciate the beauty and animals sharing the space with you.

We have been to this preserve once before years ago. It offered several trails & a small hill that provided awesome view of the grassland. It is dog friendly and it is also a horse trail so need to watch out for horse poops. It is a nice, easy hike where cows are free to roam. We were towing our RV Trailer and it is good that they had parking along the side for vehicles towing a trailer. We went Sunday near noon and it wasn’t busy.

Simply amazing! Super easy hike with great views and lots of great photo ops. Our day the weather was perfect and the skies were clear. We could see for miles. Love the strolling cattle and horses on the trail. We went on a weekend and a park ranger was there to answer questions and had a display of local flora and fauna. There's a couple different loops, both short and easy. There is a little bit of an elevation change but peaks quickly then you're headed back down. The trail had only a few people on it and lots friendly dogs to pet and plenty of hawks to watch. Bring water as always and be prepared to want to go back again. Only draw back (not really for me because I love to watch aircraft land) is this place is right under the glide path for Ramona airport. All in all a great day on a great trail!
