About four miles up Highway 74 from the 111 junction, this small free visitor center has kid-friendly exhibits on desert wildlife and geology, and staff who'll point you to easy trails. The gentle 2-mile Randall Henderson Loop starts right out back and is a great first desert hike for families. Go early and carry water — the trails are fully exposed.

Visitor center was partially closed for upgrades in June. It is just a small place with minimal exhibits and a small store. Couple of short desert trails around the center to see plants and a small tortoise enclosure. Staff was friendly and informative. Probably better to visit over the winter months; too hot in June (100+).

Starting on our way back East on our cross country trip with a visit to this national monument. Very nice visitor center. Informative and welcoming, the park rangers were very knowledgeable and suggested trails to visit. In our walk we spotted so many humming birds!! There is an area for a turtle, but we did not see it (even though a veggie lunch was laid out for its enjoyment). Accessible, wide paved pathways. Bathrooms and a gift shop. Plenty of parking.
