Parks & Hiking
Double Peak Park
At about 1,646 feet, this is the highest point in San Marcos, with 360-degree views from the Pacific to the mountains on a clear day, plus a fun playground with rock-climbing structures and shaded picnic tables right at the summit. You can drive all the way up Double Peak Drive so little legs don't have to hike — but the trails are there if you want them.
FreeDiscovery Lake (Lakeview Park)
An easy, flat, paved 0.8-mile loop circles this little lake — perfect for strollers, scooters and first bikes, with ducks to spot and a playground plus a seasonal splash pad at the Lakeview Park end. The splash pad runs in timed bursts and shuts down mid-November through mid-March, so plan warm-weather visits accordingly.
FreeWalnut Grove Park
A leafy, spread-out park with two separate playgrounds so different ages can play without piling on top of each other, plus shaded picnic shelters with BBQs, walking trails and an equestrian arena that's fun to peek at. Great for reserving a shelter for a birthday party, and the mature trees mean real shade.
FreeHollandia Park
A local favorite with a jungle-gym playground and a beginner climbing wall on the lower level that keeps kids busy for ages, plus sports fields, a skate park and an off-leash dog run. Tucked into a neighborhood off Mission Hills Court and open until 10pm — a nice after-dinner stop in summer.
FreeSunset Park
One of the city's biggest and best-equipped parks, with two playgrounds (one for toddlers, one for bigger kids) plus a splash area for hot days, disc golf, sand volleyball, basketball and wide walking trails — easy to make a half-day of it. Restrooms at both ends and shaded picnic areas make it a solid party spot.

Bradley Bike Park
A 3.4-acre city bike park in the southeast corner of Bradley Park, with jump lines and a pump track arranged so riders can work up through skill levels. E-bikes, motorized wheels and bikes with pegs aren't allowed.

San Marcos's big sports park, with lighted ballfields and arena soccer, picnic shelters, BBQs and a playground. The city has put in temporary play equipment while it plans a new, larger playground, so expect changes. It is also where the city's Fourth of July fireworks happen.

A neighborhood park that combines a splash pad, a skate plaza, a half basketball court, a playground and trail access. The splash pad is shut for winter from November 15 to March 14.

San Marcos's year-round pool: a heated 25-yard pool with an attached wading area, a sprayground and shaded deck. Kids 14 and under need an adult, and a family Splash Pass ($270 for up to 5) covers both city pools.

The main park in San Elijo Hills, with a splash pad, playground, dog park, lighted ballfields, picnic shelter and a community building. The splash pad is closed for winter from November 15 to March 14; the city reported repairs on it in spring 2026.
FreeWoodland Park Pool
The city's summer pool, with diving boards and a water slide. It reopened in June 2026 after a five-month renovation with new plaster, tile and a resurfaced deck. It is closed in the off-season until Memorial Day weekend.

San Marcos Library
This San Diego County branch at the Civic Center is a cool, quiet refuge on hot or rainy days, with a dedicated kids' area and free family programming. Friday-night public shows in a full-dome theater on the Palomar College campus, plus free telescope viewing on the patio. Children under 5 aren't admitted, there's no late seating, and shows often sell out, so buy online. Parking is free for shows in Lot 5 only.
