Things to Do in Poway with Kids

Poway calls itself 'The City in the Country,' and inland North County's outdoor life proves it: Lake Poway for fishing and pedal boats (and the trailhead to San Diego's famous Potato Chip Rock), the shady stroller-friendly Blue Sky Reserve, and Old Poway Park, where kids ride a real vintage train on weekends.

Arts & Culture

Old Poway Park

A charming turn-of-the-century town square where kids can ride a real vintage train and a hand-car on weekends. Come Saturday morning to pair the train with the farmers market (8am–1pm) for produce, kettle corn and live music. The grassy grounds and historic buildings make an easy, low-cost outing even when the train isn't running.

Free entry; train rides a few dollars per person
Parks & Hiking

Blue Sky Ecological Reserve

A shady, mostly flat oak-and-riparian canyon that's one of the gentlest nature walks in inland North County — great for younger kids and strollers on the main path. The wide trail eventually connects up to Lake Poway for a longer loop. Free docent-led walks are offered on weekends, and the tree cover makes it a good pick on warmer days.

Watch the clock — the Lake Poway gates close in late afternoon.

Museums & Learning

Kumeyaay-Ipai Interpretive Center

A small, meaningful cultural site preserving a Kumeyaay village with reconstructed dwellings, a ramada and native plants, staffed by knowledgeable docents.
