Santa Margarita River Trail Preserve

This Wildlands Conservancy preserve packs miles of easy riverside trails where kids can splash at the water's edge and spot birds and butterflies. Go in the cooler morning hours and bring water, since there's little shade on the open stretches. Parking and entry are free.

Los Jilgueros Preserve

A gentle 46-acre preserve near the heart of town with about two miles of flat looping trails, ponds and shady tree groves perfect for little legs — one of the best easy bird-watching spots in Fallbrook, so pack binoculars for the kids. Managed by the Fallbrook Land Conservancy and free to visit.

Fallbrook sits on some of the richest gem pegmatite in the country, and this volunteer-run museum shows it off — tourmaline, geodes, petrified wood, fossils. Free, and compact enough that a squirmy five-year-old will still make it to the end.

An 18.6-acre community sports complex with baseball, softball and soccer fields plus open walking paths. Weekend mornings are wall-to-wall league games — come in the afternoon if you want the fields to yourselves.
