School Started. The Ocean Didn't Get the Memo.

There are backpacks by the front door again, which means the summer version of our family — the one that could decide at 10am to drive somewhere — is officially retired until next June. Meanwhile it is still hot enough inland that the car steering wheel is a hazard, and the ocean is doing exactly what it was doing three weeks ago.

That gap is the strange part of late August. The calendar says school year. The weather says summer. If you moved here from somewhere with real seasons, like we did from Chicago, it takes a couple of years to stop expecting the air to change just because the schedule did.

So the weekends get smaller. Not worse — smaller. Here's how I've started thinking about them.

Beach, but late

The best hours at the coast right now are the ones after most families have packed up. Parking loosens, the sand stops burning, and you get an hour or two before dark. Salt Creek Beach in Dana Point and Aliso Beach Park in Laguna are both easy from South County, and neither requires a whole-day commitment. Bring a sweatshirt anyway — the marine layer doesn't care what month it is.

If your kids are the poking-at-things type rather than the swimming type, Treasure Island and the Montage tide pools are worth building a morning around. The catch is that tide pools are only tide pools at low tide. Check a tide chart before you go, not after. There's more on where to look in our tide pool guide.

Hikes: go early or wait

August is not the month to talk a nine-year-old into a trail at noon. If you're hiking, be back at the car before it gets serious — Bommer Canyon in Irvine and Whiting Ranch in Lake Forest are both close enough to do at 7am and still be home for breakfast. We keep a running list of the ones that actually work with shorter legs on the kid-friendly hikes page. Honestly, though, most of these get twice as good in October. There's no shame in waiting.

The two-hour Friday

Some weeks the only thing anyone has energy for is a wheel and an ice cream. The Balboa Island Ferry plus a frozen banana is about as low-effort as an outing gets, and the Fun Zone ferris wheel is right there if you want to stretch it. Closer to home, the Giant Wheel at Irvine Spectrum does the same job without the drive to the peninsula.

When it's just too hot

On the 95-degree Saturdays, indoors wins. Public skate at Great Park Ice is genuinely cold, which is the whole point, and it's one of the few places where a 14-year-old and a 9-year-old can do the same activity without either one being bored. Color Me Mine in Mission Viejo is the other direction — sitting down, air conditioning, nobody yelling. More options on the indoor list.

That's it. Shorter outings, later starts, less driving. If you want to see what's actually happening on a given weekend rather than guessing, the calendar is where we keep it.
