How long to spend

Plan a full day; covering the park means five to seven miles of walking on paths and hills, and families who try to pair it with the San Diego Zoo on the same day usually regret it.

Best time to go

Arrive before opening and head first to Walkabout Australia, then catch one of the first Africa Tram departures, since animals are most active in the morning and retreat to shade by late morning on warm days. Spring brings Butterfly Jungle, and the late afternoon sees another bump in animal activity as it cools.

Parking & getting there

The park has a large paid general lot, with closer preferred parking available, and San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance adult members park free. Take I-15 to Via Rancho Parkway and follow the signs east; transit options are limited, so check gonctd.com before relying on the bus.

Best ages

Works for all ages, but the distances and hills are a lot for little legs. Younger kids get breaks at the Mawazo Woods Discovery Area playground near Gorilla Forest, the Savanna Cool Zone splash pad, and the Conservation Carousel at Safari Base Camp.

Food

Outside food and non-alcoholic drinks are allowed in small soft-sided coolers (about 12 by 12 inches), but no glass or alcohol. On-site options include Mkutano House overlooking Elephant Valley, Thorntree Terrace and Barking Deer at Safari Base Camp, Mombasa Cooker in Nairobi Village, and snack stands throughout; any food stand will refill water bottles.

What to bring

Sturdy walking shoes rather than sandals, a refillable water bottle, layers, sun protection, and a phone battery pack. Escondido runs noticeably warmer than coastal San Diego, and swimwear or a change of clothes helps on splash-pad days.

Rain or heat plan

On hot days, seek out the shaded Tiger Trail, Gorilla Forest's glass viewing areas, the indoor Hidden Jungle aviaries, and the Savanna Cool Zone misters. On a rainy day, the Children's Discovery Museum of North County in Escondido is an indoor option nearby.
