California Mission #9, San Buenaventura in Ventura was delightful. I am not Catholic but am visiting all of the California Missions. This was the 4th Mission of six on this vacation trip. We bought the tour and there was a wedding going on in the chapel, so we hung out in the beautiful garden for awhile and toured the little museum. This mission is called “The Mission by the Sea” and was founded by Father Lausen on March 31, 1782. It has a beautiful courtyard with lots of interesting trees and prayer areas. This was one of the Missions that make you want to be a Catholic. Even though many people were there, some came to pray before the Virgin Mary shrine in the garden. Some others just seemed to be relaxing on a bench until the wedding party poured out. There is a pair of silver angel wings in the garden which I used for a picture. I am named after an angel, so it seemed like the thing to do. Don't miss the historic buildings and statues behind the chapel. It's all on the tour map.

Highly recommended - 125 year old Mission Basilica San BuenaVentura is a great place to visit if you're Catholic (even if you're not) and into Catholic history OR if you wish to go to Mass in a Genuine Spanish Mission in Ventura, Cali. The Father / Priest is SO friendly and accommodating to visitors..! They have a functioning Church/ Basilica - A Museum and also a gift shop. While you're there, there is also multiple types of restaurants and shopping in downtown Ventura. Great place for the whole family.
