If you are looking for a backdrop that feels like a hidden European estate with a soul rooted in Old California history, Rancho Los Alamitos in Long Beach is one of my absolute favorite canvases. As a hybrid photographer, I’m always looking for textures that honor both the clean precision of digital and the nostalgic grain of 35mm and medium format film. The Rancho offers exactly that. Here is a look at how we navigate this stunning four-acre site for an editorial-meets-documentary engagement story. The Permit & Process First things first: the Rancho is a preserved historic landmark, which means it requires a very thoughtful, mindful approach. I handle the photography permit process alongside my couples to ensure we have exclusive, cleared access. Because this venue offers a lot of beautiful shade, we can pick any time during the year, as long as it is during operational hours (1:00 - 5:00pm!). Where We Capture the Magic The grounds are diverse, and I love utilizing the different "rooms" of the garden to give your gallery maximum variety: The Adobe Ranch House & Rose Gardens: This is where we lean into your Formal Editorial look. The historic white walls and structured florals are a dream for Medium Format film portraits. We are permitted to shoot all along the porches and the manicured pathways here. The Secret Gardens & Olive Grove: For that "Soft & Airy" feel, we head into the lush, shaded corners of the gardens. The light filtering through the trees here is gold for skin tones! Think bright, pastel florals, and lots of renovated, green-painted wood and charming seating and architecture throughout, along with a tucked away tennis court! The Working Barns & Cactus Garden: This is awesome for anyone that wants more of a rustic chic, charming countryside vibe for the look and feel of their photos. It’s the perfect spot for those candid, "fly-on-the-wall" 35mm film moments. The rustic wood of the barns and the architectural cacti provide a gorgeous, edgier contrast to the softness of the flowers.

  My friends and I visited on a beautiful January day. The facilities were charming and the grounds were wonderfully maintained. Everyone that we met on duty that day was outstanding. Our tour was lead by Sharon Leno, a docent. She was terrific. Very warm and friendly and extremely knowledgeable on the Bixby family. As she lead us through the Big House, childhood memories popped up in my mind. Her stories from the Bixby family were so real I felt I could see the family members in the rooms. Nice way to spend a few hours. Highly recommend Rancho Alamitos and if you are lucky you will meet Sharon and have her take you to meet the family.
