Mission San Juan Capistrano
California's storybook mission with koi ponds, gardens, and the famous returning swallows — a calm, photogenic history lesson. Founded in 1776 as the seventh of California's 21 missions, it's built around a ruined Great Stone Church and quiet courtyard gardens that still feel like a step back in time. The cliff swallows that made the mission famous traditionally return each spring around March 19, the Feast of St. Joseph, a migration later immortalized in song.

Caspers Wilderness Park
OC's biggest wilderness park: oak-lined trails, a nature center, and campgrounds where kids can spot deer, hawks, and roadrunners. At 8,000 acres, it's by far the largest park in the OC Parks system, filling river terraces and sandstone canyons along San Juan and Bell creeks in the coastal Santa Ana Mountains. The small, volunteer-run nature center near the entrance has hands-on wildlife exhibits and a sand pit for making animal track castings, a good first stop before heading out on the trails.

Now operating as River Street Ranch, this family-owned petting zoo has run in San Juan Capistrano's historic Los Rios District since 1980, drawing more than 150,000 visitors a year. Brush more than 100 farm animals, take a pony ride, and dig for gems, then grab a treat among the Los Rios cottages.

Mission San Juan Capistrano 250th Anniversary: Free Birthday Cupcakes
Nov 1, 2026 is the Mission's 250th anniversary, and the Mission is giving away free birthday cupcakes from noon to 2pm (supplies limited to the first 1,000 guests, in collaboration with Costco SJC). The Mission's Día de los Muertos altar is also on display in the historic Sala. The 3:30pm official celebration is invitation-only. Tip: arrive at noon, since cupcake supplies are limited.

Visitors can add a loved one's name to the community ofrenda in the Mission's 18th-century Sala. It is a quiet, family-friendly way to explain the tradition to kids. Tip: pair it with the Nov 1 250th-anniversary day, and check the Mission calendar since listed days skip Mondays.

Capistrano Lights: Mission in Lights
Mission San Juan Capistrano adds a tree lighting, Dickens-era carolers, a full-scale nativity, a lighted halo grove, a scented citrus garden and dancing swallows. Evening programming includes a digital projection at 6:05pm. Tip: your ticket includes daytime admission, so arrive in the afternoon to see the Mission first and stay for the lights.

St. Joseph's Day & Return of the Swallows
A single-day celebration at Mission San Juan Capistrano — the ringing of the historic bells, mariachi and flamenco, Native American storytelling and kids' crafts. Much more contained than the Swallows Day Parade later in the month.

Swallows Day Parade & Mercado Street Faire
The 67th annual non-motorized parade marking the swallows' return, followed by a Mercado street faire in downtown San Juan Capistrano. Street closures begin at 10am, so arrive early.
