Coming from LA? Plan your boat parade night

Wednesday Dec 16 is the biggest night, with fireworks off Newport Pier at about 6:15pm and a free holiday market at Marina Park from 4pm; for lighter crowds pick a Thursday, since Friday and Saturday draw the heaviest crowds. Parade lots fill quickly and organizers say to arrive early, so aim to be parked well before the 6:30pm start; Balboa Village by the Fun Zone has the most nearby parking, and no official shuttle is listed. Watch the boats pass the Fun Zone around 7:15pm, then take the Balboa Island Ferry or walk over to the Balboa Island bayfront, where boats circle the island until about 8:11pm and the Ring of Lights homes stay lit. Organizers' main advice is to dress warm and get a spot early, and to book any cruise or waterfront restaurant table well ahead because they sell out.

Heads up: resident displays are put up by homeowners, so streets and dates shift a little every year. Park legally, keep noise down and stay on the sidewalk. Ticketed events and the boat parade publish their dates each fall, so check the official link before you drive.

Frequently asked questions

When is the Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade in 2026?

December 16 to 20, 2026, from about 6:30pm to 9pm each night. It is the parade's 118th year. Opening night, Wednesday December 16, starts with fireworks off Newport Pier at about 6:15pm, and drone shows run twice nightly from Peninsula Park and the Balboa Bay Club.

Where is the best place to watch the Newport boat parade?

The Balboa Island bayfront is the classic spot, because the boats circle the whole island (about 7:45 to 8:11pm) and the decorated Ring of Lights homes are right behind you. Balboa Village by the Fun Zone (about 7:15pm) has the most nearby parking, and Marina Park, Lido Marina Village, Bayside Drive Beach and Lookout Point in Corona del Mar are good public alternatives. All are free.

Is the boat parade free?

Yes, it is free to watch from any public shoreline. Holiday lights cruises and parade cruises from Newport Landing and other operators are ticketed and sell out, so book early if you want to watch from the water.

What night is least crowded?

Fridays and Saturdays draw the biggest crowds. Opening night (Wednesday) is the busiest weeknight because of the fireworks. A Thursday is the best bet for a calmer night, and either way aim to be parked well before the 6:30pm start.

Are there other boat parades in Orange County?

Yes. The Dana Point Harbor Boat Parade of Lights runs December 11 to 13, 2026, and the Huntington Harbour Boat Parade is December 12 and 13, 2026. Huntington Harbour also runs the ticketed Cruise of Lights, a narrated boat tour past lit waterfront homes, December 19 to 23, 2026.

What are the best free Christmas light neighborhoods in Orange County?

Eagle Hills in Brea (about 100 homes with a marked walking loop), Sparkle Ball Lane in Fullerton, Candy Cane Lane on El Corzo Lane in Rancho Santa Margarita, the Huntington Harbour waterfront homes, and Balboa Island in Newport Beach are the standouts. Mission Viejo, Ladera Ranch and Aliso Viejo also have well-known light streets.

Is Orange County worth the drive from LA for Christmas lights?

For the boat parade, yes: it is a one-of-a-kind December event, and Newport Beach is roughly 40 to 45 miles from downtown LA. Pair the parade with Balboa Island's lit homes, or combine Disneyland or Knott's holiday nights with nearby Fullerton and Brea neighborhoods. Leave extra time, since traffic on the 405 and 5 builds on December evenings.
