Laguna Niguel Regional Park
A big lake stocked for fishing, pedal boats, shaded playgrounds, and wide lawns for kites and frisbee — a low-key all-day park. The 44-acre lake sits inside a larger 227-acre county park and is stocked with catfish year-round and trout in the winter months, so a fishing license (for anglers 16 and up) is the only real prep needed. Wide lawns, picnic areas, and a jogging trail ring the water, making it an easy full-day base for a family with mixed-age kids.

The city's main recreation hub at 29751 Crown Valley Pkwy, with a heated pool (about 81°F), a sprayground, two rubber-surfaced playgrounds, an outdoor amphitheater, ball fields, 30 picnic tables and 7 barbecues. It adjoins the Niguel Botanical Preserve. Call before going for sprayground dates, since the city page doesn't give the season.

Niguel Botanical Preserve
A volunteer-run 18-acre garden at 29751 Crown Valley Pkwy with Australian, California, Chilean and South African gardens, a rose garden, a labyrinth and a gazebo. Kids can walk the paths and watch for butterflies, hummingbirds and bees. It's beside the Crown Valley park playgrounds, so it pairs easily with a park visit.

A 2,600 sq ft OC Parks center at 28373 Alicia Pkwy (Laguna Niguel address, on the Aliso Viejo border) with child-friendly exhibits including a mock cave, a full-scale animal and plant diorama, and an interactive topographic trail map. It sits at the entrance to Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park, so it's a good warm-up before the trails.
