Best time to go

Arrive early on weekends, since the free lots fill by mid-morning. Wednesdays and Saturdays bring living-history demonstrations like blacksmithing and spinning, while Día de los Muertos and Cinco de Mayo celebrations draw big crowds.

Parking & getting there

The park has free lots with time limits, including Lot C on Twiggs Street and Lot F on Juan Street, plus nearby street parking, but all of it fills early on busy days. The Old Town Transit Center, served by the trolley, is a few minutes' walk away and is often the easier option.

Best ages

School-age kids get the most out of it, sitting at desks in the 1865 Mason Street Schoolhouse, climbing on the covered wagon at the Blacksmith Shop, and seeing stagecoaches at Seeley Stable. Younger kids enjoy the open plaza and the old-fashioned candy shop.

Food

Restaurants and cafés are right in the park, including Fiesta de Reyes, and tortilla makers work in the windows at Cafe Coyote and Old Town Mexican Cafe just outside it. The Best Donuts also has a shop in the park.

What to bring

Comfortable walking shoes and sun protection, since most of the time is spent walking between buildings outdoors. Ask about Junior Ranger booklets to keep kids engaged.

Rain or heat plan

Many stops are indoors, including the museums, the schoolhouse, and the historic homes, so a light-rain visit can work by hopping building to building. On a heavy-rain day, the indoor San Diego Natural History Museum or Model Railroad Museum in Balboa Park is a short drive away.
