  Enjoyed a great hike up to the top of two of the peaks. The trails are well maintained and easy to follow. Watch out for poison oak, as it is close to many of the trails running along the river bed.

  Mission Trails is one of San Diego’s hidden gems. It’s the perfect spot to disconnect without driving too far from the city. The trails are well-marked, with options ranging from easy walks to more challenging hikes that give you a great workout. The views from Cowles Mountain or North Fortuna are stunning, especially at sunset. I love that you can choose different vibes here—hills, canyons, even the San Diego River running through some trails. It feels safe, there are always people hiking, running, or biking, but it never feels overcrowded. Bring water, sunscreen, and a hat since some areas don’t have shade, but overall, this place is absolutely worth it. A must if you want nature, exercise, and amazing views right in the city.

  This is a great hiking location. The Reserve has a very nice visitor center. Tom Thompson gave us valuable info when we arrived as well as a map and instructions. Great info for kids and adults. It is 8000 acres and has 60 miles of trails. Be sure and wear good shoes and bring water and snacks. Really awesome place. Highly recommend.

  My toddler boys have been on so many different hikes but this remains at the top of their list! We love the visitor center which has an interactive museum attached to it where you can learn about the Kumeyaay people and the rich natural history of the area. We love all of the different trails which are kid friendly with mostly flat terrain and some climbing opportunities and even a creek to cool off in. The trails are also dog friendly, with a water station and a dog parking post in front of the visitors center. But be careful on hot days with both furry friends and kids who can get easily over heated. There is some poison oak on the trails so educate yourself on what that is and make sure your kids are careful too. There is an overflow lot if you can’t find parking here on the weekends or when they are hosting a free event
