An 18-acre city park with two playgrounds, ball fields, tennis courts and a historical museum. The Los Angeles Astronomical Society runs the observatory, where visitors look through an 8-inch refractor in the dome or through members' telescopes on the lawn. Picnic shelters have no shade covers, so bring an umbrella by day, and confirm observatory nights at laas.org/garvey before a late trip.

Neat park, and there's also an astronomy club at nighttime! If you go at nighttime, it's a pretty nice serene area, though I do wish the buzzing lights from the football stadium lights would be quieter. Otherwise, it's a good place. If you are into stargazing, they meet up on Wednesdays at like 7 or 7:30pm. Small crew, but passionate people about their craft. You'll meet some friendly people, some pretentious people unfortunately, and the whole spectrum underneath. But such is life, eh?
