An 18-acre city park with two playgrounds, ball fields, tennis courts and a historical museum. The Los Angeles Astronomical Society runs the observatory, where visitors look through an 8-inch refractor in the dome or through members' telescopes on the lawn. Picnic shelters have no shade covers, so bring an umbrella by day, and confirm observatory nights at laas.org/garvey before a late trip.
