Shields Date Garden

Indio, CA

★★★★★4.5(1,704 Google reviews)

This retro 1920s date farm on Highway 111 is a beloved local stop, and the walk through the 17-acre date grove is free. Splurge on the famous date shake at the old shake counter, then let the kids wander the shaded garden path. Go in the morning before the desert heat peaks.

Very interesting trip back in time near Palm Springs. Charming video narrated in part by the original founder of the date farm. Restaurant open for breakfast and lunch. Lovely patio is shady but still quite warm. Great service and food. There’s a walk but it was too warm for us. They serve the best date shakes in the area hands down.

Before coming to Palm Springs, I read a lot of posts and recommendations that this is “THE PLACE” to get the best date shake. I’ve never had one before so I went with the original Vanilla Date Shake - WOW was amazing! So tasty and thick and smooth. The place itself was really cute too. Bright and lots of things to look at and buy. All local and most made there. Service was super welcoming and friendly too. Highly recommend taking a trip here for a Date Shake

Originally founded on Christmas Day in 1924 it’s one of the most famous date shake locations in America. I grew up in San Diego and we had a second house out in Indian Wells so I would come out here often throughout my years and every trip would make sure we stopped at Shields. Also seasonally they have fresh fruit juice, such as grapefruit and orange. There is a large free parking lot right in front of parking is very easy and pricing is fair. Service is always very friendly and fast and they have many different things that you can buy for gifts such as dates and even clothing. I would highly recommend and would classify this as one of the must stop sites when visiting the Coachella Valley.

With over 78,000,000+ views on my Google reviews as a Level 9 expert Google Reviewer, I always aim to give clear and honest feedback. Visiting Shields Date Garden was such a beautiful experience. The grounds are extremely well kept, clean, and filled with so many things to see while walking through. There are many palm trees, fruit trees, gardens, and faith themed displays including statues and crosses throughout the property that make it feel peaceful and unique. We were amazed to learn they carry over 100 varieties of dates along with so many products made from palms and dates. Admission is free to walk around and enjoy the gardens, while the food, drinks, treats, and gift shop items are available for purchase. The restaurant, shakes, ice cream, and drinks make it a perfect stop whether you want to relax or just grab something quickly on the go. A very memorable place with something for everyone. Definitely an awesome visit for our family.

Loved our visit to Shields Date Garden! The date shake was incredible creamy, sweet, and the perfect treat after walking around in the Palm Springs heat. We also enjoyed learning about the different date varieties and the history of date farming in the Coachella Valley. Friendly staff, charming old-school vibe, and a fun little stop if you're in the area. Highly recommend grabbing a shake and some fresh dates to take home!
