As of July 1, 2025, the City of Irvine has transitioned out of the OC Public Libraries (OCPL) system. Looks like I am the first one to post review for the NEW Irvine Public Library reopened couple days ago. Newer - modern more renewed version. They have printouts for $0.15 b&w and $.050 color. They just set up - as of Saturday August 9th , 2025 - card didn’t work for print out , we had to do cash. Vast collection on books , airy , spacious and one of the largest libraries in Orange county. However, staff? Eh- we know the kindness and warmth that OCPL Laguna Hills Technology center offers and it’s not matched in all honesty. However, Location and ambience is unmatched. They have rooms and also Outdoor patio facing the lake - so serene 🥰 Plenty of parking- however on Weekends their are other events at the civic center so it’s tough to find one. We look forward to getting to know this place and people better. The card works at both university park and heritage park. They have free events every month for teens, adults and children- and have pumpkin spice lip balm and scrub making coming soon end of August ! Hope that was helpful.

Today I had a very disappointing experience at this library. I brought my young son to the children’s story and music session. He is still very little and hasn’t had many opportunities to be in public settings, so he became overwhelmed and started crying for a short time. Instead of showing understanding or offering any support, the instructor leading the children’s program asked us to leave and told us we could come back only after he stopped crying. I understand that libraries should maintain a comfortable environment for everyone, but this was a children’s program designed for babies and young kids. Occasional crying is a normal part of early childhood. Families attend these programs so children can gradually learn how to socialize and become comfortable in new environments. At other libraries I’ve visited, instructors and staff have always been understanding when a young child becomes upset. They encourage parents, show patience, and create a welcoming environment where children can learn and grow together. Being asked to leave made me feel embarrassed, unwelcome, and unsupported. I believe a children’s program should be a place where young children are given patience and understanding—not where families feel excluded because a toddler cried. I hope the library will encourage its children’s program instructors to respond with more compassion and empathy. A little kindness can make a huge difference for parents who are doing their best to help their children learn and adapt to the world. Unfortunately, this experience left me feeling that this library was not as welcoming to young families as I had expected.
