Lake Balboa / Anthony C. Beilenson Park
A swan-boat lake ringed by a flat 1.3-mile path and cherry trees that burst into pink blossom each spring — easy biking, ducks, and picnics in the heart of the Valley. The 27-acre lake is filled with reclaimed water from the nearby Tillman Water Reclamation Plant and sits inside the much larger Sepulveda Basin Recreation Area, so there's room to wander well beyond the lake loop.

Stoney Point Park
A dramatic cluster of sandstone boulders where legendary climbers learned the ropes — older kids love scrambling the rocks for big San Fernando Valley views. Climbers have been coming here since the 1930s, and by the 1950s the park was a training ground for future legends like Royal Robbins and Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard. Today the sandstone — formed roughly 68 million years ago — holds more than 150 mapped routes, though the soft rock means added caution is needed after rain.

Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve
A 225-acre reserve within the larger Sepulveda Basin, centered on an 11-acre lake with a protected bird-refuge island and a 2.6-mile loop trail — some of the most accessible birdwatching in the Valley. It's a major stopover on the Pacific Flyway, so expect herons, egrets, and even American White Pelicans; dogs aren't allowed, to keep the wildlife undisturbed.

Orcutt Ranch Horticulture Center
This free, 24-acre estate once belonged to William Warren Orcutt, an early California oil pioneer who discovered some of the first prehistoric skeletons at the La Brea Tar Pits — he built the Spanish Colonial Revival residence here around 1926, now a designated LA Historic-Cultural Monument. Rose gardens, a citrus orchard, and a 700-year-old oak make it shady, calm, and toddler-paced, with seasonal u-pick citrus days.
