- Library card: Little Italy has no branch; Central Library at 330 Park Blvd. in East Village is closest, and one SDPL card works at all 37 locations.

- Play space: There's no city rec center here; the county's Waterfront Park has a children's play zone and splash fountains running 10 a.m.-6 p.m. daily.

- Local insider: Parking is scarce; Waterfront Park's two paid garages open to the public weekends, holidays and after 5 p.m., or ride to County Center/Little Italy station.

Galbani Bella Vita Fest
Chalk artists create Italian-themed street paintings live on India Street, alongside Italian food and music. Kids love watching the pavement art take shape over the weekend. Note that wine tasting is part of the event.

Started in the early 1990s by transplanted New Yorkers, this three-day street-stickball tournament has up to 12 teams playing on India and Columbia streets. It's a free, nostalgic spectator event that's fun for sports-minded kids.

Little Italy Tree Lighting & Christmas Village
Little Italy lights the permanent 25-foot tree in Piazza della Famiglia in a traditional Italian ceremony, with Santa, live music, 10-foot nutcrackers and a Christmas Village of artisan vendors on India Street. Arrive before 6pm to get close to the piazza for the lighting.

San Diego's original fine-art festival fills India Street with 250+ artists, four music stages and interactive art projects for all ages. Go early on Sunday for thinner crowds with little kids. The Little Italy trolley station is a short walk away.

This 10,000-square-foot cobblestone piazza on West Date Street, between India and Columbia streets, has a tiled fountain, umbrella tables and views of the bay. It hosts concerts, cultural events, the Mercato and the 25-foot Christmas tree. Kids like the fountain and the open space while parents grab gelato or coffee.
