The Cheap Newport Afternoon

There's a small window every year between the end of summer crowds and the start of holiday everything, and we're in it right now. Late September in Newport Beach is the version of Newport that locals actually like — warm water, thinner sidewalks, and a shot at parking that doesn't require circling for twenty minutes with everyone in the car quietly turning on you.

So here's the cheap plan I'd point a family toward this week. It's three small things that add up to a real afternoon.

Start with the ferry

The Balboa Island Ferry is one of the shortest, oddest, best rides in Orange County. It holds a handful of cars, it crosses the harbor in a few minutes, and you can ride it as a walk-on. Kids who are bored by the idea of a boat tend to get very interested once they're standing on the deck of something that carries actual cars. It's also the rare attraction where the ride itself is the point — no line management, no upsell, no gift shop at the exit.

Frozen bananas are the Balboa Island tradition, and yes, they're worth doing once so your kids understand what everyone's talking about.

Then the Fun Zone

On the peninsula side, the Balboa Fun Zone has the Ferris wheel that shows up in every photo of Newport ever taken. It's a small, slightly worn waterfront strip, and I'd set expectations accordingly — this is not a theme park, it's a boardwalk. That's the appeal. The wheel is slow and the view over the harbor at the top is genuinely good.

Honest note: the ferry is the cheap part. The rides and the arcade are à la carte, and it's easy to let "one more" happen four times. Decide the number before you get out of the car and the afternoon stays cheap.

End at the sand

If there's daylight left, Corona del Mar State Beach is a short drive and a gentler scene than the peninsula — big sand, jetty views, bathrooms. September ocean temps are about as good as they get here, which is the thing people from colder places never believe until they're in it. A couple of other things happening

If you have a little one at home, Bluey's Big Play is at the Fox Performing Arts Center in Riverside on Thursday, September 24. That's a real drive from South County — call it a commitment, not a whim — but if your household is in a heavy Bluey era, that's the show. Hockey families can note that the Ducks and Kings play a preseason game at Honda Center tonight, which is a much lower-stakes way to try a game than a regular-season ticket.

Everything else we know about is on the calendar, and if you want the version of this that costs almost nothing, start with free and cheap. Those two pages get used around here more than any others, and I think that says something true about how most of us actually plan weekends.
