We Finally Did the Irvine Park Railroad Pumpkin Patch. Here's the Real Report.

We've said for two years we'd get back to the Irvine Park Railroad Pumpkin Patch, and last Saturday we finally did — a 2pm reservation, the whole family, a few hours in the park. We already published the real prices for five SoCal pumpkin patches a few weeks ago; this is the follow-up nobody asked for but that I wanted anyway — what it's actually like once you're through the gate, and the one thing that guide didn't make clear enough: this is really two separate purchases, not one.

Made it — Irvine Park Railroad, 2026.

The reservation is the real admission fee — about $21 a person

Once the patch hits its busy weekends (ours was the first one requiring it, Sept 26), you can't just walk in. You book a Pumpkin Patch reservation online ahead of time — we picked the 2pm slot — and that reservation is the actual admission fee: Irvine Park Railroad prices it at $16–22 per person depending on the date and time, plus a $5 service fee per reservation. Ours worked out to about $21 a person. That's what gets you through the gate and includes one train ride. For four of us, the reservations alone ran roughly $80–90 before we'd bought a single activity ticket.

Park entry is a separate line item on top of that — $5 to park on a weekend, $3 on a weekday, paid to the County of Orange at the gate, not to the railroad. Small compared to the reservation, but still real money.

The $100 ticket pack is a second, separate purchase

This is the part that's easy to miss: the reservation does not include any activities besides the train ride. Everything else — cookie decorating, carnival games, pumpkin decorating — needs its own tickets, bought separately once you're inside. They're $8 each, or a 15-ticket pack for $100 (a $120 value, so it pays for itself at ticket #13). We bought the pack, and here's what it covered for us:

• Cookie decorating at one of the craft tables
• A handful of carnival games (the inflatable alien pictured above was a prize, not a purchase)
• Picking out and decorating a pumpkin

That's three kinds of activity out of fifteen tickets, with room to spare — we could have added another round of games and still had tickets left. The hay maze, the haunted house and the photo-op cutouts (the pumpkin growth chart, the "Wanted" frame) are free and don't touch the ticket count at all. If your family will do more than a couple of paid activities, the pack is the better deal.

The extras: pumpkin bread and ponies

There's pumpkin bread for sale near the entrance, worth grabbing on the way in. There are also pony rides for the kids — run by a separate operator from the railroad itself, so it's a separate line item, but it's right there in the same park if your kids want more animal time after the train.

Was it worth it

Yes, easily — but go in knowing the real total is reservation + tickets + parking, not just one number. For us that was roughly $80–90 in reservations, $100 for the ticket pack, and $5 to park: call it $190 for a family of four for the afternoon, pumpkin bread and pony rides not included. We were there a few hours and could have stayed longer — budget more time than you think you need. Bring cash for anything outside the ticket pack, book your reservation before you drive out, and don't skip the free photo stops (the pumpkin growth chart and the "Wanted" cutout cost nothing and the kids loved both). This is genuinely one of the better pumpkin patches in Orange County for the money, and we'll be back.
