A 4,000-acre city and county preserve between Rancho Peñasquitos and Mira Mesa with a year-round creek, groves of oaks and sycamores, a freshwater marsh, and a small waterfall that cascades through volcanic rock. The trail to the falls is long for little legs, so bikes or a sturdy jogging stroller help. Watch for rattlesnakes and poison oak, and call the ranger line after rain because trails can close.
