A city lifeguard program, running since 1985, for ages 9–17, held on the sand north of the pier in front of the 8th Street lot. It covers open-water swimming, paddleboarding, body surfing and first aid. Last year's participants get priority registration, then it opens up, so sign up as soon as the spring Shoreline Recreation brochure comes out.
