Sweetwater Summit Regional Park
Bonita, CA
By Simir Shah
★★★★★4.5(1,926 Google reviews)
A big county park above Sweetwater Reservoir with camping, an equestrian staging area, picnic areas and miles of trail with valley views. It's exposed and hot midday in summer — go early and bring more water than you think you need.

The good: The campground itself is nice with full hook-ups and nice privacy. We had a pull thru site that had plenty of room for our 40 foot 5th wheel and our long-bed dually truck. The views of the surrounding mountains and hills is lovely. There's lots of trails to walk in the park and down by the reservoir, which is only open from Friday-Monday. The bad: There is tons of traffic noise that is non-stop, day and night, as you are very near an interstate highway and other nearby roads. In addition, we were invaded by ants in our 5th wheel from our first day and sprayed them daily but no luck getting rid of them until we left. The Ugly: you are under the direct incoming flight path to San Diego International airport. A huge jet flies over your campsite approximately every minute to two minutes for at least 16-18 hours of every day. There was a lull during the hours from maybe 1am-6am, otherwise the noise was almost constant. If you don't mind constant loud noise day and night, you will like this campground. We couldn't wait to leave.

Nice little quiet place to walk, see the reservoir, mountains, freeway at some part. Think it connects to the Bonita trail and golf park. But there's a quiet campground there too. Close to the city but out far enough to be away. Sometimes I get lucky and saw some coyotes roaming around

I gave this only 4 stars because of the constant air traffic and 2 surrounding interstates. The air traffic was the worst a jet almost every 1.3 minutes. You couldn't sit outside and enjoy yourself. The park itself is a 5. There is also a huge ant problem, be sure to spray your surroundings.

I got a last minute camping spot. Park is lovely, scenery is stunning. Clean bathrooms and pay showers available. Easy in a nd easy out, what's not to love?? There were a lot of campers but I felt my space had plenty of privacy. There are trash receptacles. Everything was clean and pleasant. I had positive experiences calling the Parks & Recreation office as well as the ranger station, everyone was super helpful.

Campground is amazing! Lots of space, friendly people and it’s staffed with some of the greatest Rangers! Amphitheater with a fire pit is a nice touch! Will definitely be coming here again!
