Pioneer Park (Santa Fe Trail Historical Park)

El Monte, CA

★★★★★3.3(3 Google reviews)

On the bank of the Rio Hondo, this 11-acre park is a California Historic Landmark marking the end of the old Santa Fe Trail. There's a playground, big shady picnic areas, and lighted ball diamonds, plus access to the Rio Hondo bike trail if you bring scooters or bikes. Pack a picnic and let the kids burn energy after a quick history-marker hunt.

My earliest memories are of seeing my older bros' baseball games at Pioneer Park. I can still smell the burgers and taste the guacamole strips. Can't forget about the candy necklaces and Abba Zabbas. The mighty "Field's Mobiles", the name of my brother's team. (I wanted to play so bad my Mom made me a Field's Mobile uniform with the number "1/2" on the back. Thick cotton uniforms. Thick cotton stir-ups. Actual STEEL cleats! (OMG!!) Life was simple and kids got hurt. And lived. Nowadays you nearly have to wrap your kids in bubble wrap or full body armor to play ball. Back then it was a game that still was very much like the big leagues. Oops!! I was supposed to review the park. Oh well....
