Trestles Beach (San Onofre State Beach)
San Clemente, CA
Day-use parking $15 ($20 on peak and holiday days)
By Simir Shah
You can't drive to world-famous Trestles; families walk a 1.5-mile nature trail from San Mateo Campground (830 Cristianitos Rd), passing under the Trestles railroad bridge, to reach this cobble beach and surf break. Watching pro-level surfers is the draw, but the walk and the cobbles are a lot for toddlers, so bring a carrier or a sturdy wagon. Elsewhere in the park, everything south of the Trail 1 lot on the San Onofre Bluffs is still closed after the Scales Fire, and Surf Beach has no water or restrooms (as of Oct 25, 2026).
