Where to stay for a ski trip

For most SoCal families the big question is simply day-trip or stay over. Here's the honest breakdown, plus the best family bases near each resort.

Curated by Punita Patel, Editor

Day trip or overnight?

  • Mountain High (Wrightwood) — ~1.5–2 hrs. Default to a day trip.
  • Snow Valley (Running Springs) — ~2 hrs. Day trip, or add a Lake Arrowhead overnight.
  • Big Bear (Snow Summit / Bear Mountain) — ~2 hrs with no traffic, but 3–4 hrs on a winter Friday with chain control. A long day trip works, but overnight is the smart play for a real weekend.
  • Mammoth — ~5–6 hrs. Overnight only — a multi-day vacation.

Local pro tip for Big Bear: arrive Thursday or Friday evening to dodge the Friday-afternoon I-10 + Hwy 330 jam and morning chain control.

Big Bear Lake — the main overnight base

Home to Snow Summit and Bear Mountain (one lift ticket covers both). For families, a cabin or vacation rental usually beats a hotel — kitchen, bedrooms, space, often a hot tub. Big Bear's rental market is deep (Big Bear Cool Cabins, Big Bear Vacations, Big Bear Cabins, Snow Summit Townhouses, plus Airbnb/Vrbo for ski-near-slopes filters).

Prefer a hotel? The Holiday Inn Resort The Lodge at Big Bear Lake is the most family-resort-style option (near The Village, kids' activities), with Hotel Marina Riviera, Northwoods Resort and Lagonita Lodge as other family-workable choices. Heads up: the lifts are about 2.4 miles from The Village, so you'll drive to the slopes even from a "Village" hotel.

Wrightwood — for Mountain High

A small mountain town where most families just day-trip — but there are cozy cabins and small inns (Cedar Lodge, Canyon Creek Inn, Grand Pine Cabins, plus Stay Wrightwood rentals and Airbnb cabins) within about 3 miles of the lifts if you want a relaxed two-day visit.

Running Springs / Lake Arrowhead — for Snow Valley

Stay close in Running Springs / Arrowbear (cabins minutes from the lifts — Giant Oaks Lodge, Wild Olive Cabins, Airbnb), or base in nearby Lake Arrowhead (~20–25 min) for a nicer experience — the upscale Lake Arrowhead Resort & Spa (indoor pool, spa, game room, private beach) plus the charming village.

Booking tips for families

  • Book early for winter weekends/holidays — they sell out and usually need a 2-night minimum.
  • Choose a cabin — kitchen, bedrooms and a hot tub, often cheaper per person than two hotel rooms.
  • Go midweek for lower rates, shorter lines and frequent cabin specials.
  • Read the cancellation policy — SoCal snow is unpredictable; favor flexible terms.
  • Always pack tire chains and check road conditions the morning you drive up.

Rates and minimums change constantlywith season and demand — we name verified, currently-operating places rather than quote prices that go stale. Confirm live rates, minimum stays and cancellation terms on each property's own site before booking.

Frequently asked questions

Should we day-trip or stay overnight for a SoCal ski trip?

Mountain High (Wrightwood) and Snow Valley (Running Springs) are very day-trippable from OC/LA. Big Bear is doable as a long day trip if you leave very early, but staying overnight is the smarter play for a full weekend, multi-day trips, or to beat Friday-afternoon traffic and morning chain control. Mammoth is overnight-only (5–6 hours away).

What's the best lodging for families in Big Bear?

For families, a cabin or vacation rental usually beats a hotel room — a kitchen (big meal savings with kids), separate bedrooms, space to spread out, and often a private hot tub. Big Bear has a deep rental market plus family hotels like the Holiday Inn Resort near The Village. Note the lifts are about 2.4 miles from The Village, so you'll still drive to the slopes.

Do ski-town rentals have a minimum stay?

Yes — winter weekends and holidays commonly require a 2-night minimum (sometimes more over holidays), and they book up early. Some cabin companies run 'stay 2, 3rd night free' long-weekend deals. Book well ahead, and check the cancellation policy since SoCal snow is unpredictable.
