International Printing Museum

Carson, CA

★★★★★4.8(194 Google reviews)

A working museum of antique presses where docents actually ink up and run the machines, so kids see how books and newspapers were made by hand. Go on a Saturday and ask about the Ben Franklin live demonstration, where a costumed printer lets children pull a real print to take home. Parking is free in the lot out front.

I attended a printing press poster making session. It was awesome! I printed five posters on a printing press, and also enjoyed a docent led tour of the museum. Friendly staff, great tour, and love the Women’s History Month posters!!

We visited for a special event, the LA Printer’s Fair, and it was such a great venue for an event focused on the printing arts. Just like it normally does, the museum was offering demonstrations and chances to try printing for yourself. Presses were in operation and docents shared the incredible history of type, printing art, and the power of words put to paper. What could otherwise be a dry subject matter comes to life at the museum in a way I’ve not experienced before, despite seeing other exhibitions about printing. The event itself was grand — if a tiny bit overwhelming in scale — and offered so many vendors to buy and collect art from, as well as the demonstrations and hands-on experiences the museum is known for normally. If printing interests you, don’t miss this museum.

Amazing and overwhelming (in a good way). So many amazing and functional things, so much information, everyone there is knowledgeable and helpful. Did a windmill press workshop that was fascinating.

Unique museum with original and replicas of printing machines, some hundreds of years old, excellent docents who explain and demonstrate how printing has evolved over the centuries, hands-on opportunity to craft your own type and print a souvenir card or bookmark. Highly recommend.

I just had the pleasure of touring thru this small though quite informative museum. It was an up close and personal insight into the power of the press! From the Gutenberg press to the screen printer, I gained insight into the lettering and designs that early on, helped to convey a message. Interesting how the evolvement of image transmission transcends time thru innovation. Visitors are able to tour thru the museum on Saturday’s and with prearranged guide led group tours on weekday’s. It’s a great perspective on the production behind the scenes!
